October 2021 Homestead Video Roundup

The high growing and food preservation season has wound down. To reflect the slower pace, our YouTube channel has reduced to weekly content for the more dormant winter season ahead…plus we’ll soon have our hands full building a house. Expect plenty more content come next spring! But to help you keep up with what’s growing at Cottage Farmstead this year, we’ve put together an October 2021 homestead video roundup highlighting the latest happenings around these here parts. Enjoy!

The farmhouse build is becoming more real! We went to our future homestead to stake out the homesite with both of our construction savvy fathers. Using stakes and a transit level we selected our future front porch view and figured out how deep we’ll need to to dig down for a basement.

On our future homestead, we want a front yard vegetable garden which means I want it pretty and functional! Join us on the farm today to measure the future kitchen garden location so we can sketch out the garden plan and determine how much mulch, soil, and more we may need to get started. Raised beds or not? Orchard near barn? So many options!

Do you want to travel and keep a homestead at the same time? Keeping chicken chores simple while you are gone are key to finding and keeping a happy a petsitter. Join us as we show the basics of how to care for backyard chickens that we train our chicken sitters before we head out-of-town for the Homesteaders of America conference.

Time for the annual Vannette Family applesauce canning bee! Every year we can bushel upon bushel of apples. Get an overview of how to make applesauce and water bath / steam can homemade applesauce.

Hope this October 2021 homestead video roundup inspires you to get growing, preserving and restoring your own homsteading heritage.
