Canning and food preservation season is in full swing! We’ve got our first pickles and tomato sauce in jars and the culinary herb supply is mostly stashed. As you’ll see below our garlic is minced, the onions frozen, and the potatoes are curing. We’ve been blessed by a bountiful harvest this year. To help you keep up with what’s growing at Cottage Farmstead this year, we’ve put together a July 2021 homestead video roundup highlighting the latest happenings around these here parts. Enjoy!
While we don’t own a special egg candler, we attempted to peek inside our broody hen’s eggs with a flashlight.
The chicks hatched! …and all decided that Elsie was their mama rather than Betty Lou. Soak up their cute fluffy fuzz as they won’t be this little for long!
We harvested our onions to preserve for future soups, stews, stocks, and sauces. Ever since I learned how to freeze diced onions, it has become our favorite food preservation method.
When we had 2 expectant mama hens, we needed to build a second chicken tractor fast. See how we built a chicken tractor out of pallet wood that cost practically nothing.
Busy with the cute chicks, we didn’t get to our off-site garden plot for nearly a week. Some of our first harvest surprises.
Join me in the Cottage kitchen and cook with me as I do some homestead meal prep and from-scratch cooking.
Prevent food waste with minced garlic in oil with the bulbs that aren’t good candidates for curing and dry storage.
From being rather unsuccessful potato growers, we were blown away by how 80+ pounds of kennebec potatoes we harvested!
Join us for an evening garden walk taking a look at the bean and tomato tunnels and the 9-foot tall popcorn.
Hope videos in this edition of July 2021 Homestead Video Roundup helps you grow your vegetable garden and inspire you to grow more food. Don’t forget to subscribe to keep up with the latest happenings!
