If the boot fits..Finding Homestead Boots

Back when we lived in the suburbs and all my boots had to do was splash in a few puddles between the house and backyard chicken coop, they didn’t have to be quite so farm tough. Since moving to our 23-acre homestead, I’ve been on the hunt for some good everyday homestead boots that slip on easily, have a little insulation for our mild winters, and are comfortable in the garden and trekking across the field of cow pies. On the search, I tried out three of the popular brands and thought I’d share what I thought of each of them so you can decide which pair of homestead books is right for you.

Sloggers

These were my original homestead boots that came with me from the suburbs. I’ve bought 3 pairs over the last 9 years and still love them. I wear orthotics, and they fit perfectly inside these boots. They’re great for rainy spring days and summertime in the garden. What they lack, however, is insulation. They are COLD in the winter. I’ve tried layering 2 pairs of wool socks when we have the occasional snow. Just doesn’t cut it. And now that we have two poultry flocks and cows to tend, I need something warmer for winter.

Muck Boots

These are Farmer Nathan’s favorite boots. He is ROUGH on socks and shoes, but Muck Boots hold up for a surprisingly long period of time for him. He wears them everyday working at the market garden farm in all weather and gave me rave reviews. When I spotted a pair of them on clearance, I decided to give them a try myself. Not sure if the sizing was off, but a size 8 Sloggers does not translate to size 8 Muck! They fit far too loose and my orthotics didn’t fit, so they flop around on my feet and ankles which is not a great combo when you have weak ankles to begin with. Unfortunately, they were on clearance and non-returnable…womp womp. They have been my backup boots for a few months now, but I had been hoping for something better for this winter.

Hisea Boots

I’ve had my eye on a pair of Hisea Boots for a while, and was excited that they reached out to see if I’d like to review a pair of their boots. What perfect timing! My feet were starting to get quite cold in my Sloggers. First impressions, I love the color! While these are mainly for around the farm, their navy plaid design would make a super cute rain boot for going to town on a rainy day.

I was excited that my orthotic fit perfectly in the footbed. But I discovered the insole it came with was super cushy and comfortable as well. Way better than your average boot inserts! I can probably wear these with the original inserts for short barn runs and not have to worry about swapping out for my orthotics. Big bonus! Plus the handles are fantastic for pulling on quickly.

I have half-size feet, so remembering the monster Muck boots I decided to go with a size 7. (why don’t boots have half-sizes?) The length is perfect, but it is a little snug on the width. If you want a thicker sock, you should probably size up. I also have larger calves. These fit comfortably, with my farm utility leggings and straight leg jeans, but my thicker winter pants wouldn’t tuck into the top of the boot. If that is important to you, again, size up for a looser fit.

With the weathermen predicting a higher chance of snow for us this winter,  I’m excited to have toasty and dry toes. These Hisea boots are rated for comfort all the way down to -4F…which it never gets that cold here in South Carolina, so my toes will be nice and warm all winter long. If you’re looking for a pair of warmer homestead boots, give Hisea a try!
